Hey guys, Danny Z here from StreamingBundles. This guide is a small primer based on the industry experience and research that went into creating our gear recommendations. There are a lot of questions out there regarding what mic setup is best for live streaming. Most streamers focus on the visual aspect of their stream, neglecting their audio. Vocals are especially crucial in live streaming. Arguably the biggest part of the experience is talking to and interacting with your audience in real time.
That conversation between a streamer and their audience is what makes live streaming so special, and so different from other forms of media. So just as the radio DJ or talk show host rely on a quality microphone set up, so must a streamer consider this investment an important step on their journey. As any growing streamer will tell you, you want to give your audience every reason to stay and interact with the stream.
The truth is that there are way too many good streams out there for viewers to stay and watch if your audio quality is not up to par.
They will just get annoyed and leave. In fact, audio is so important that Twitch released an audio-only mode for their apps.
You want your audience to not only be able to hear you clearly but start forming a bond with you and your voice. Thanks to the music industry, there are a TON of options for capturing quality vocals. From preamps to mics, mixers, audio interfaces, compressors, etc… the list is endless. You could easily spend thousands of dollars on a microphone alone.
Our advice to growing streamers is to limit choices like your lives depended on it. There are too many options out there that you end up not knowing what to pick and you never do anything. But why? Pick a tried and true setup, and instead focus your efforts on the hard part: growing your stream.
Your audience only cares that you sound good. Gives your voice a nice warm sound with minimal background noise and interference. This will roll off some of the low-frequency response. Now we move onto the Parametric. A Parametric EQ is just as the term implies. You can adjust the parameters of the microphone audio. You do not need 8, 10 15, or a 31 band EQ when we are only dealing with a 3, Hz wide signal.
A Parametric EQ usually has only 3 filters. Wrong microphone, not addressing speaking into the microphone correctly, too far away from the microphone, too much room echo and a host of other situations.

With parametric EQ you can change the parameters of the EQ system. With normal two or three band equalizers, the frequencies are set and fixed by the design engineer of the radio. You only have control to either cut or boost the filter frequency they build into the transmitter. The first thing to set is the frequency that you need to affect. There will be three important frequencies to attend to.
Low end, Mid Range, and Highs.
Microphone is too sensitive
For most, roll off the low end by setting the first filter at Hz. You then will tell the filter to roll that off or notch that Hz. Do you want some big boomy low end? Boost it with that adjustment but it is best to reduce notch that low end a bit for cleaner and clearer audio.
The second adjustment is the Bandwidth which is set in the traditional audio nomenclature of octaves. If you set this first filter frequency to Hz. You would want to start by keeping that bandwidth to the halfway point.
Notch or Boost. If you want to cut some low end, you notch dB at Hz. We have explained one filter. There are three and that is all you will need to make your transmitter sound terrific. You simply select the needed frequency, boost or notch that frequency and set the bandwidth as to how wide you need to affect. You can listen through headphones through the monitor but I have always found it better to listen through headphones through a second receiver while transmitting into a dummy load.
You then know exactly how you sound to the outside world. You set the frequency of the filter. You then set the Bandwidth of that filter and finally, you tell the filter if is notches cuts, reduces or boosts that filter frequency. Using the Heil Sound wide frequency range microphones such as the PRPR 30 or PR 40 you will want to roll off the low end as the preamp of the does not handle a lot of bass response.
YOU have to make the final decision by listening to your own signal.Tired of messing around with digital-based audio filters to get your voice sounding silky smooth? As for the special effects, you can play around with the settings to make your voice sound like anything from a chipmunk to some sort of galactic being. Yamaha also make a 12, 16 and 20 input model of this mixer however the 10 channel variant already offers more than you will ever need. An audio mixer is a piece of hardware that both processes and manages audio channels and merges them together to provide one or more outputs.
If you want to achieve the best audio quality for your stream, you will need a mixer to take you to the next level. Additionally, those that stream with a dual-pc setup will need an audio mixer to get their sound working correctly. There are two things that makes a mixer better suited for live streaming, one is the convenience it provides, such as multiple channels ideally a minimum of 4 with volume faders.
The second is how much control you have over your microphone settings and how much you can fine-tune each channel specific channel, ideally a 3-band EQ and a compressor.
An audio mixer for streaming will give you total control over your audio settings. Streaming setups are expensive, peripherals like microphones and headsets can end up being just as expensive as your computer components.

Want to use voice dictation software? Want to record some audio from a website that streams music?
Want to use your PC as a makeshift karaoke machine? This is particularly true when recording sound, given that Windows can only record from one source at a time. Also, special devices, like voice dictation headsets and TV tuner cards, have their own inputs. To choose the default audio source, highlight the device you want to use and click Set Default. Most applications will automatically use the default device to record sound, but some particularly voice-dictation software require that you choose a source separately in the application itself.
If you speak to your mic, the mic level should rise real time:. On the General tab, you get some basic information about the device and you can choose to disable it here if you like.
The more interesting feature is on the Listen tab. This is a cool feature whereby you can play the sound that is being recorded by your microphone directly to your speakers. So as you talk into the microphone, the sound will be played in real time to your speakers.
Check the Listen to this device box and select the device you want to play the audio back through. If you have multiple playback devices, you can choose from the dropdown list. Click the Apply button and any sound picked up by your mic should play through your speakers in real time.
On the Levels tab, you can adjust the sensitivity of the microphone depending on your needs. On the Advanced tab, you can change the default format for the audio. There are many other options, including DVD quality, which you can use if you have a high-quality microphone. If you go back to the Recording tab, select Microphone and click on Configurethe Speech Recognition dialog will appear. Here you can setup voice control for Windows, train the computer to understand your voice better and setup your microphone properly for speech recognition.
Lastly, back on the Recording tab, you may notice an option called Stereo Mix. So what does it do? Basically, it lets you record any sound that is playing on your computer.
For example, if you are watching a YouTube video on your computer, how would you record the audio? If you use the default Sound Recorder or Voice Recorder Windows 10 apps, they will automatically record from Stereo Mix as long as you disable the microphone first. Using this input, you can record music playing on your computer, audio from a video playing on your computer, or any other sound from your PC.
Hopefully, this gives you a good overview of the different audio inputs in Windows and how you can use them to record the audio you need. If you have any questions, feel free to post a comment.
